Deciding to get a wooden wardrobe is a good idea and will narrow down your options somewhat but you will still have a lot of styles to choose from.
One of the things that affects the overall style of the wardrobe is the type of doors it uses. Based on the type of closet doors, you can choose from sliding door wardrobes, folding door wardrobes and traditional wardrobe armoires with hinged doors.
Sliding door wardrobes, as the name implies, have sliding doors or panels, just like those found in traditional Japanese houses and in a lot of patios. Usually, these wardrobes have two doors that run on tracks both at the top and the bottom, but there are some that have three. Sometimes, the doors are only attached to the top, too, which makes it seem like they are hanging and sliding at the same time.
Sliding doors are further divided into different types. There are bypass doors that slide into each other and there are doors that slide to one side, sometimes into a pocket so that the closet is completely open.
A sliding door wardrobe can have panels made of the same wood as the body of the wardrobe, or a similar type. They can also be made of glass and even full-length mirrors for rooms with a contemporary design.
Folding doors come in various types, too. There are bifold doors or two sets of doors that fold to the side, there are multifold doors and also accordion doors that can completely collapse to one or either side of the wardrobe.
The most common type, though, are hinged doors. Wardrobes with hinged doors are very easy to find, and are often less expensive than folding door or sliding door wardrobes. They are easy to open, too, though you have to make sure no one else is standing outside the closet when you do.
Another advantage of wardrobe armoires with hinged doors is that you can utilize the space at the back of the door. Here, you can place pegs for bags and hats or hang a belt hanger or closet organizer for your accessories. Kids and teens can also decorate the inside of the closet door with photos and artwork.
When choosing between sliding door wardrobes, traditional armoires and folding door wardrobes, you have to consider not just how it looks, but also the level of convenience it offers. Safety is important, too, especially with kids’ wardrobes or if you have kids around.
